In this one I put 10 minutes on the clock and try to bang out a full beat on the Roland P-6. I start the way I usually do: live-recording drums, and I even use a different kick as a “click” because I really don’t like digging through menus just to find the metronome. Once the drums are down, I bring in the Polyend Synth and record a quick multi-part synth pass so I’m not wasting time hunting for perfect takes. The whole point is momentum—get something working, mute the ugly stuff, and keep moving. The main workflow I’m pushing here is my favorite P-6 sampling approach: step slicing with parameter locks instead of auto chop. Auto chop is fast, but you don’t get the same control over slice points—on the P-6 I can lock start (and end) positions right on the grid and basically “program” chops per step. It got a little weird while I was duplicating patterns (my P-6 was tripping), but once it clicked, it’s a super powerful way to make the sample feel intentional. I finish by lush-ing the sample with delay + big reverb, then do my little bass trick: high-pass filter with resonance to pull low end forward (careful—it can clip fast).
