In this video I’m breaking down the biggest thing that bugged me about the Roland P-6: the auto-chop is crazy fast, but you can’t actually move the slice points. So if the chops land wrong—bad transients, pops, clicks—you’re basically stuck with whatever it gives you. I show the workaround I’ve been using instead (shout to Dibia$e for putting me onto this): per-step START parameter locks on the step sequencer, so you can “manual slice” a sample by ear. I walk through the exact setup because it’s a little clunky, and I’ve seen people say it “doesn’t work” in the comments. The key is recording parameter locks correctly—record has to be on, or you’ll accidentally change the start point for every step. From there I build a quick beat and show how this opens up other per-step tricks too (micro-timing, velocity, motion recording), plus a simple filter move: using a high-pass with resonance to create a bass peak when the sample has low end you want to emphasize. The main takeaway is you don’t have to accept auto-chop’s decisions—you can get way more control on the P-6, even without a waveform display.
