Getting into DAWless gear seriously boosted my creativity, but I hit a problem that creeps in the deeper you go down the rabbit hole: every new box fixes one limitation and adds a new one. At a certain point it stops feeling like jamming and starts feeling like a hectic dance between menus, UIs, MIDI routing, and cable swaps. In this video I rewind through how my setup evolved—from a super simple “one box” Circuit Tracks workflow, to adding an SP-404 for sampling, then a synth for keys, then more MIDI control—and how that “mega setup” eventually slowed me down with option paralysis and project-management chaos. The big takeaway is this: the problem wasn’t the gear, it was the routing. I wanted all my hardware connected and ready to go, but without everything constantly “talking” over MIDI or forcing me to crawl behind the desk to rewire. So I rebuilt my studio around a patchbay (DF Audio Minibay V2) and routed everything by audio into a single sampler-first workflow. I show what a patchbay actually does (it doesn’t process sound or replace a mixer), how I patch a synth into my sampler input in seconds, and the limitations—like minimal mixing unless you use summing, and my preference for keeping it simple and mostly mono. Creatively, everything starts in the sampler again, and I’m back to moving fast.
