About This Video

In this video I had a bit of fun putting a spotlight on the vinyl community as the “broad church” that it is. There are so many different species of record collector out there—from the thrill-of-the-hunt types chasing elusive first pressings, to the more casual, lifestyle-led crowd who are really after that perfect snap for Instagram clout. It’s all tongue-in-cheek, but if you’ve been around records long enough, you’ll recognise at least a few of these stereotypes (and, let’s be honest, you might see a bit of yourself in more than one of them). I run through ten collector archetypes: the Completist with museum-grade spreadsheets and misprint obsessions; the Audiophile (I’m guilty) tweaking VTA and anti-skate and talking soundstage and microdynamics; the Nostalgist who lives in their decade; the Instagram Curator with the dust-free setup; the Flipster treating records like a commodity; the Eclectic Collector with beautifully chaotic taste; the New Pressing Purist who loves a 180g hype sticker but hates non-fill and warps; the ultra-thrifty Digging Purist who lives for bargain bins; the DJ Collector whose records have “seen better days”; and the Equipment Obsessive debating mats, cables, and isolation feet. The main takeaway: most of us are a mix, and we go through phases—so tell me which ones I missed.
