About This Video

In this video I run through my top life hacks for record collectors—little, cheap tweaks that make day-to-day vinyl life easier and can genuinely save you money. I start with the most unglamorous tool in the world: a makeup brush. It’s a brilliant turntable companion for getting into the crevices and keeping dust at bay, because dust builds up fast and it just looks unsightly. From there I move onto a toast rack (yes, really) as a safe way to air-dry records after hand cleaning so you’re not putting anything even slightly damp back into a sleeve—mold is not part of the hobby. I also cover a few “salvage” and “stop being a mug” tips. If a scratch is causing a skip, a toothpick plus a jeweler’s loupe/USB microscope can sometimes clear the blockage enough to make a record playable again (you’re not truly repairing it, but you might rescue a rare pressing). For ultrasonic cleaners like the Degritter, I decant distilled water into a smaller bottle to avoid slopping it everywhere when topping up. And if you’re tired of tight spindle holes, don’t pay silly money for an overpriced reamer—use a 7.3 mm drill bit instead, carefully, so you don’t overdo it. I finish with organization and jacket care: a label maker for divider cards, and the right double-sided tape (or SeamZeazy strips) to repair seams cleanly and invisibly.
