About This Video

In this video I walk through five upgrades that can genuinely boost your turntable’s sound quality without you having to buy a whole new deck. If you want the biggest bang for your buck, I start with the cartridge—because it’s the main voice of your turntable and the first point in the signal chain. I also talk about the reality of taste and compatibility: the Ortofon 2M range is lively and energetic (especially up top), while something like the Nagaoka MP-110 leans fuller and warmer. And yes—please check tonearm compatibility before you start swapping things around. From there I get into the easy win that many people overlook: a stylus upgrade. Going from something like a 2M Red to a 2M Blue stylus is a simple swap, but it moves you from bonded to nude elliptical, which lowers mass and improves detail—especially in the high frequencies. Then we tackle isolation (vibration is the enemy), phono preamps (built-ins often sound flat and lifeless compared to a dedicated unit), and finally record weights/clamps as the “icing on the cake.” They’re optimization, not revolution—but they can tighten things up when the rest of your setup is already sorted.
