About This Video

If you jump on Amazon and search “record cleaning kits”, you’ll be absolutely flooded—dozens of options, different brand names, different packaging, different prices. In this video I take a step back and talk honestly about what a lot of these kits actually are, how they’re put together, and what you should know before you buy. This isn’t me calling anything a scam, and it’s not me saying you should never buy an Amazon kit. It’s simply about understanding what you’re paying for. From my research, I’m pretty confident many of the popular kits are more “assemblies” than unique designs—generic, off-the-shelf components sourced from the same suppliers, then branded up and packaged nicely. You can see similar parts on wholesale marketplaces like Alibaba/AliExpress, which helps explain why so many kits feel identical once you’ve tried a few. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that business model, but there’s a big difference between assembling a bundle and designing a proper cleaning system where the materials and components are deliberately chosen to work together. I also touch on practical hand-cleaning realities: those common velvet pad handles spread fluid well, but they’re poor at absorbing it—so dirty fluid can end up drying back onto the record. At the very least, I want to see a decent microfiber towel included, and I’m cautious about harsh brushes and high-alcohol fluids. Ultimately, some kits will work fine for some people—but I want you to buy with your eyes open.
