About This Video

In this second episode of my Record Shopping & Pub Hopping series, I headed out to Bedford—just north of where I live—because, frankly, my own town doesn’t have a proper record shop. I started down by the River Ouse, wandered past some local history (including the remains of a Norman castle), and then made my way into Bedford’s Edwardian arcade to visit Slide Records. It’s a new-vinyl shop run by Warren and Nerys, and they were genuinely friendly and happy to chat music. I ended up in the jazz section (with a little detour into funk—what can I say, I’ve got eclectic taste) and picked up John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” plus some Sly & The Family Stone. From there I did what this series is really about: leaning into the human side of music. I stopped at The Flower Pot for a well-earned pint and, as always, ended up talking to strangers about records—exactly the kind of serendipity you just don’t get from Spotify recommendations. Then I visited Thirsty Records, a rough-and-ready used shop/café with guitars, fair pricing, and even a resident cat (Sylvester). I walked out with Led Zeppelin I, Peter Gabriel’s “Car” album, and a practically-new Queens of the Stone Age record—plus a gifted RAF pilot sounds record that I might actually use on the channel. I rounded it off at the Wellington Arms, chatting with the landlady Liz about why pubs and record shops are both community hubs we really need to protect—especially as everything shifts online and AI gets stronger.
