Warped records can be a real thorn in the side for record collectors. Whether due to poor storage or manufacturing defects, we all have records in our collections that aren't flat, resulting in degraded audio quality or a risk of damaging our cartridge's cantilever. In extreme cases, warps can make a record completely unplayable, as the stylus can pop right out of the groove. So, what can you do if a record becomes warped? In this video, I review the Pro-Ject Flatten It Record Flattener to see how it performs with normal warps and even extremely warped records. About This Video

Warped records are a real thorn in the side for collectors—whether it’s poor storage, manufacturing defects, or just bad luck. In this video I review the Pro-Ject Flatten It record flattener to see if it can genuinely fix warped records without risking damage to the grooves or, worse, your cartridge cantilever. I also talk through why the old “two heavy books / two panes of glass” approach is slow and hit-or-miss, and why the oven method is, frankly, a high-risk path I wouldn’t personally go down. I walk through the Flatten It’s build and operation: it’s understated, extremely solid, and supports all record sizes and thicknesses. It’s temperature controlled to a max of 58°C (136°F), and Pro-Ject recommends a first power-on test to ensure it doesn’t exceed 60°C—mine didn’t, so happy days. I ran a normal warp through the recommended 2-hour heat cycle and cooled it down to around 30°C, and the results were properly impressive. Then, for a bit of fun, I deliberately cooked a charity shop record in direct sunlight until it resembled the Rocky Mountains—and the Flatten It still brought it back to a playable, flat result. My verdict: brilliant results and robust build, but it’s expensive (around $1,000 / £750) and fully manual—no app, no automation—so it’s best suited to serious collectors or dealers with the space and budget.
