Smart Comp 3 by Sonible promises something most compressor plugins never really deliver: removing the technical headache of compression without taking control away. ✅ Try for free here - https://www.sonible.com/smartcomp3 🎉 Get 30% off with discount code - pushpatterns30 In this video, I put Smart Comp 3 to the test in a real-world mixing session and break down exactly how it works, what makes it different, and where it actually makes sense to use it. This is not a theory video. It is a practical Smart Comp 3 review focused on real use cases for electronic music, drum buses, low-end control, and sidechain compression. You will see how Smart Comp 3 uses analysis and one-click setup to handle the technical side of compression, while still letting you push things creatively using the compression scope. Instead of juggling threshold, ratio, attack, and release on every track, Smart Comp 3 lets you focus on feel, punch, and balance. I also cover the features that genuinely set Smart Comp 3 apart from traditional compressor plugins: - Input riding to stabilise levels before compression - Spectral compression for controlling specific frequency ranges - Spectral ducking for smarter sidechain compression - Group controls to manage compression across multiple tracks If you are curious whether Smart Comp 3 is actually worth using, or you are looking for a modern alternative to traditional compressor plugins, this video will give you a clear answer. 00:00 Why Compression Still Feels Confusing 00:25 What Smart Comp 3 Is Trying to Fix 01:05 One Dial That Changes Everything 01:45 The Compression Scope Explained 02:30 Leaving the Safe Zone 03:05 The Feature Every Compressor Should Have 03:45 Making Compression Feel Effortless 04:00 Spectral Compression in Practice 04:55 Tightening the Low End Without Squashing 05:10 A Smarter Way to Sidechain 05:55 Setting Up Spectral Ducking Properly 06:30 Getting the Groove Right 07:00 Why This Changes Mix Wide Compression 07:25 Controlling Multiple Compressors at Once 08:50 Final Thoughts on Smart Comp 3 Free Ableton Training: ✅ Free Ableton Live Training - https://www.pushpatterns.com/free-ableton-live-training ✅ Free Ableton Push 3 Training - https://www.pushpatterns.com/free-ableton-push-3-training Full Courses 🎛 Learn Ableton Push 3: https://www.pushpatterns.com/Abletonpush3course 🎛️ Learn Ableton Live 12: https://www.pushpatterns.com/abletonlive12course 📲 Connect with Me 📸 Instagram: @pushpatterns 🐤 TikTok: @pushpatterns 🌍 Website: www.PushPatterns.com 👋 Who Am I? I’m Craig, a musician, Ableton specialist, and music tech lecturer with over 10 years of teaching experience at top universities like ACM, BIMM, ICMP, and WaterBear. I’ve taught thousands of producers how to master Ableton Live and Push 3, helping them go from feeling overwhelmed to actually finishing tracks. Beyond teaching, I’ve worked as an Ableton playback tech on primetime FOX TV shows like Name That Tune and Don’t Forget the Lyrics and as an Ableton tech for artists like Years & Years, Melanie C (Spice Girls), and Sam Fender. About This Video

You’ve probably had that classic compressor moment: tweak one dial, then another, and an hour later you’re still not sure anything’s actually better. In this video I put sonible Smart Comp 3 into a real mixing session and see if it genuinely removes the technical headache without taking control away. I load it on a drum bus, pick the instrument profile, hit play, and let it analyse—then you get that green “blob” (the compression scope) where one dial moves you between denser, punchier, snappier, or more dynamic compression while it handles the ratio/threshold/auto-release in the background. From there I show how to step outside the “safe zone” by disabling auto release and switching compression styles (clean, smooth, aggressive, custom) so you can still go full Nether Zone when you want to. The big “why isn’t this in every compressor?” feature for me is input riding—smoothing level before compression so one loud snare hit doesn’t make everything feel squashed. Then we get into the futuristic stuff: spectral compression to tighten low end without flattening the highs, and spectral ducking for smarter sidechain so you can duck specific frequency areas instead of the whole signal. Finally, I show groups—master control across multiple Smart Comp 3 instances—so you can manage ducking/compression across a whole mix without juggling a million settings.
