Most people missed this one. A quiet Push 3 update added something massive for anyone using hardware synths on stage. You can now send program changes straight from Push 3 Standalone In this video, I’ll show you how to set it up: – sort your MIDI preferences – load the External Instrument device – send program changes from each clip – and use Follow Actions to switch patches hands-free If you play hardware live, this is the update that makes Push 3 finally feel complete. I’m Craig, a musician, Ableton specialist, and music tech lecturer with over 10 years of teaching experience at top universities like ACM, BIMM, ICMP, and WaterBear. I’ve taught thousands of producers how to master Ableton Live and Push 3, helping them go from feeling overwhelmed to actually finishing tracks. Beyond teaching, I’ve worked as an Ableton playback tech on primetime FOX TV shows like Name That Tune and Don’t Forget the Lyrics and as an Ableton tech for artists like Years & Years, Melanie C (Spice Girls), and Sam Fender. About This Video

If you’ve ever tried running hardware synths on stage with Push 3 Standalone, you’ll know the pain: until now there was basically no way to send program changes to your synth from Push, which is wild because it’s been standard in Ableton Live forever. In this video I show the quiet little Push 3 update most people missed — a new Clip tab that finally gives us proper performance goodies, including program change per clip. I walk you through my exact setup: connecting the synth over USB MIDI, sorting the MIDI preferences (making sure Track + Remote are enabled, and Sync if you need it), then loading an External Instrument so I can send MIDI out and monitor the audio return on the same track. From there, the magic is in the clip view: you can set a program number inside each MIDI clip, so launching a clip instantly recalls the right patch — no risky manual preset switching mid-set. I also show how launch settings (yes, I’m still a massive fan of Toggle) and Follow Actions can work alongside program change to create hands-free, automatic patch switching. For live hardware rigs, this is the update that makes Push 3 feel properly complete.
