When it comes to recording hardware synths in Ableton Live, most people get it wrong—and that’s why everything feels slightly late. In this video I walk you through my clean, reliable setup using one stock Ableton device: External Instrument. I start with the boring-but-essential stuff: patching the synth audio into your interface (make sure the input is set to line level), then getting MIDI into the synth either over USB or MIDI DIN. USB is totally fine at home, but if you’re playing live, I generally prefer MIDI DIN for stability. Then I show the common mistake: using a separate MIDI track to send notes and an audio track to monitor/record the synth. That workflow often leaves you with measurable latency (in my example it was 8ms). Instead, I keep it on one MIDI track and drop External Instrument on it, select the MIDI destination + audio return, and let Live compensate properly.
