In this short, I’m testing something I genuinely wasn’t expecting: the built-in microphone on the Ableton Move is actually pretty good quality. The whole idea is brilliant—when you’re out and about and inspiration strikes, you’ve got a mic right there ready to capture the idea without any extra setup. I show how I sample straight into a pad: touch the pad, hit Sample, make sure the input is set to Mic, adjust gain, and decide whether you want direct monitoring on (handy with headphones, but I turn it off to avoid hearing myself twice). Once I’ve grabbed a quick vocal hit, you can hear it’s not a terrible sound at all—and I love that Move automatically chops away the silence at the start and finds the transient for you. The big takeaway though is context: for portable sketching it’s fantastic, but in a studio setting it doesn’t really stack up against the mics you’d normally use for higher-quality recording. The other gotcha is wind noise—when you’re sampling outdoors, a gust can blow in and ruin an otherwise clean take. That’s why I’m testing different mic options in the full video: price, portability, and whether they’re actually worth it.
