In this video I’m diving into the Ableton Live 12.3 update that adds XYZ mode to Ableton Push 3, and honestly—it changes everything. Inside Note Mode, I just hit Layout until I see XYZ, and suddenly the top half of the pads becomes a Kaoss Pad-style control surface. You can play notes with one hand and morph sound with the other, which is way more fun (and basically impossible) if you’re trying to grab the encoders at the same time. X and Y immediately feel great, and while Z (pressure) is there, it wasn’t behaving properly for me in the beta. I also show that XYZ isn’t just an instrument trick—it works in Drum Mode too, with a dedicated XYZ area you can assign to parameters. Then I take it further by mapping XYZ to Audio Effect Rack macros, like Auto Filter frequency and resonance, and recording that movement straight into clips as automation. The big tip here is setting macro limits so your transitions stay musical (and you don’t tear people’s heads off). Finally, I pair Push 3 Standalone with a Launchpad so Push becomes this expressive “effects unit” while the Launchpad handles clip launching—dead simple, super expressive, and it genuinely puts Push 3 in its own league.
