In this short I’m putting the Ableton Move’s built-in microphone to the test, because on paper it’s such a great idea: you’re out and about, inspiration hits, and the mic is literally right there ready to capture the moment. I show how I sample straight into a pad on the Move—tap a pad, hit Sample, set the input to Mic, adjust gain, and decide whether you want direct monitoring on (handy with headphones, but I turn it off to avoid hearing myself twice). Sound-wise, it’s actually pretty good quality for quick ideas, and I love that the Move automatically chops away the silence at the start and finds the transient so you’re not trimming all day. But in the studio, if you’re after a higher-quality recording, it doesn’t really stack up against proper studio mics. The big “gotcha” I found is wind noise—when you’re sampling outside, a gust can absolutely ruin an otherwise decent take. That’s where bringing an external mic into the workflow starts to make a lot more sense, depending on your budget and how portable you need the setup to be.
