About This Video

In this video I set up and plant the Fluval Betta 6 gallon kit and do a full little aquascape build from substrate to botanicals. This is a brand new tank Fluval sent me to try, and I’m honestly into the size—six gallons is interesting, and I like that it’s square. My favorite feature right out of the gate is the pump setup that slides out to the side, because it looks like I’ll be able to pump water out with a bucket sitting right there (which I’m definitely going to test). For the substrate, I start with a thin layer of laterite/powdered iron at the base because I’ve been told it helps beneficial bacteria down under the substrate (I used to think it boosted reds—apparently not). Then I lay down Fluorite Dark as a crunchy, grabbier bottom layer, and cap it with Fluval Stratum (those small bags you see in stores—ended up using all three). Hardscape is cholla wood mounted to slate, stuffed with Anubias from my Mega Flex tank after a long-overdue trim. I even took a mulligan and swapped to a smaller “teddy bear” cholla piece, filled the center with Stratum, and had to weigh it down with a rock for 48 hours because it floated. I finish it off with wavy green, Monte Carlo experiments, river pebbles, and a bunch of botanicals/almond leaves for tannins—yep, the water got pretty brown the next day. Next up: finding a betta, tracking the ups and downs, and a more thorough review after a few weeks of real use.
