In this video I’m back in the Fluval Shaker 44 gallon for a 19‑month trim, and it’s one of those “it looks great… until it doesn’t” situations. In person the tank still had that glorious vibe, but the top growth had gotten so dense it was turning the whole display into a dark box—hard to photograph, hard to enjoy from across the room. The main culprit was a pesty little segmented stem plant (the kind where every tiny piece you leave behind becomes more of it), plus an Anubias canopy that had gotten way too squished and deformed. The big job was pulling my suspended driftwood feature—an Anubias-covered piece hung with fishing line—without shutting anything down. Of course, I snapped the chain, heard some “breaky breaky” sounds, and discovered the cholla wood is basically crumbling at this point. I trimmed out rot, reset roots by clipping them back, and thinned the Anubias hard (I’d say I cut away about two‑thirds). Then I did a full search-and-destroy with a net to get as much of that drifting stem plant out as possible. By the end, the tank is noticeably brighter, the side view is way cleaner, and you can actually see the Betta pugnax again—though now they can see each other better too, so I’m watching for territory drama. I also end up with a big bucket of extra Anubias to keep alive and hopefully trade at a local fish store.
