In this video I kick off the Fluval Flex 2.0 build by doing the hardscape using Fluval’s Aquascaper Kit (the Red Rock Canyon set). The kit comes in two sizes—normal and mega—and I’m working with the mega box, which is basically a ready-to-go pile of substrate, sand, stone, and matching rubble. I wanted to see what a “use only what’s in the kit” scape feels like, so I ditched my usual routine and kept it simple—hands only, no fancy tools. The only extra thing I added was a little Fluval Stratum, because I love what it does for getting plants going. I walk through layering the porous base substrate as a foundation, placing stones in odd-number groupings, and building “stages” where fish can hang out (and where I can grab photos). I also talk about practical stuff like keeping enough clearance to clean the glass, and why I’m not too worried about the Flex side vents with a thick porous base. Then I add the plant substrate, a bit of Stratum into the “lasagna,” top it with sand, and finish with the detailing stones—because that rubble is what stops it from looking like a neat pile of rocks on sand. The big twist: I tried to skip the giant rock… then I put it in at the end anyway. It’s enormous, but it sets the tone and adds that chaotic, natural presence. Next week I’ll plant it out—probably a very “me” aquascape with lots of Anubias.
