Hey folks—this one is my 5‑month trim update on the Fluval Shaker kit, and it’s a good example of what happens when a planted tank gets a little too “successful.” The stem plants have filled in so thick that the whole scape starts going dark and mysterious… which looks cool for a minute, but it’s not sustainable if you want the rest of the tank (and your focal points) to thrive. I walk through what’s working, what’s getting buried, and why this trim isn’t just a haircut—it’s maintenance that keeps the tank healthy. The big lesson here is stem plant care, especially when you’re running CO2. It’s really easy to just chop the tops and call it done, but if you never pull and replant, you end up with that rooty mesh down low—dark, dense, and basically a mop that can trap gunk (and potentially critters). I also touch on the hair algae situation (it’s not 100% gone, but I’ve made real progress), the red tail splitfins I’ve still got in here, and my little Anubias “bloom” landmark finally rooting down into the soil.
