About This Video

In this December 2024 “all aquarium update,” I walk you through everything I’ve got running right now—newest to oldest—including a couple enclosures. I’m not going to pretend every tank is perfect either: I’ve got algae battles, a couple systems that need a reset, and at least one tank I flat-out messed up with (probably) detergent on my hands. But that’s the reality of keeping a whole fish room worth of planted builds—sometimes you’re balancing, sometimes you’re mitigating. I start with the newest “smart tank” and why I’m still not comfortable recommending it: it calls back to a Chinese web server, the app is glitchy, and even the timer is weird (though there’s a workaround). From there I jump to the Fluval Shaker 44, which has been the total opposite experience—great form factor, outstanding kit design, and an aquascape I’ve never tried before (suspended log with Anubias). I also cover the gecko terrarium (surprise win: a mister with bad reviews that’s been flawless on RO), the 210 with its perpetually cloudy water and mystery baby fish showing up in the sump, and a bunch of mature tanks where the big takeaway is simple: when a tank is balanced and algae-free, I leave it alone and do minimal, sensible water changes so TDS doesn’t creep up.
