About This Video

In this video I unbox, test, and review the Sony SRS-XB402M (and I also explain the XB402G version). This is the first in the SRS XB lineup to bring a smart assistant built in—"M" for Alexa and "G" for Google Assistant—and I go through what you actually get in the box, the design, controls, and how the RGB lighting gives it a really distinctive look. I also talk about portability because, honestly, from the pictures I expected it to be bigger, but it’s surprisingly compact and easy to move around, which makes it great for travel. I break down the key features like the IP67 dust/water resistance (and Sony also says it’s rust-proof), the dual passive radiators, and the app features including Extra Bass, Live mode, and the 5-band EQ. Then I get into the sound test: the soundstage is the standout here, with really nice left/right separation and a solid stereo image. Bass is controlled and enjoyable at low volumes, but as you push the volume up it starts to lose bass—so if you’re a proper bass head, this “Extra Bass” speaker might not hit deep enough for you. I also cover the drawbacks you should know before buying: no speaker syncing, no 3.5mm jack, volume can feel low until you push it (where it can get compressed/harsh), and the audio/video sync is noticeably off—especially on iPhone—so I wouldn’t recommend it for movies. Overall though, I still recommend it for the soundstage, Live mode, rugged build, and outdoor-friendly design—just keep the price in mind.
