About This Video

In this video I review the Amazon Echo Dot 3rd Generation and also talk about where the Echo Input makes more sense. I unbox it, go over what you get in the box (power adapter, guides, and the Dot itself), and then I run through the design and controls. One of my favorite things is that rotating ring light—honestly it just looks cool, and the animation showing volume levels is a really nice touch. I also like the fabric cover because it gives the Dot a more premium, home-friendly look. I test the main features and do a few voice demos like weather, commute/traffic, music playback, and even the “Inspire me” command. The far-field microphones are a big plus because it can still hear you even with loud music in the room, and it handled my accent well. I also explain skills (basically like little apps for Alexa) and the intercom-style “announce” feature, which is super handy for quick messages across Echo devices. I also keep it real about the downsides: the always-listening mic can feel creepy and can be accidentally triggered (use the mute button), the Alexa app can feel a bit lost/overwhelming at times, and you shouldn’t expect complex tasks without spending time setting up skills and settings. If you want big sound for music, I recommend the Echo Input paired with a proper speaker; if you want the full Amazon experience, consider the Echo Plus. But if you’re on a budget and love the form factor, the Echo Dot 3rd Gen is a solid buy.
