The HEDD Audio HEDDPhone is the first commercially available full range AMT headphone that has been on the market since the ESS Labs AMT-1 from 1971. The HEDDPhone received quite a lot of hype from many praising it for its innovative design and use of AMT tech. HEDD's well proven track record with powered monitors also has helped this hype. While the HEDDPhone does some interesting things, overall I find it to be a tech demo more than anything else and has a lot of flaws that need addressing. Do not take these measurements as infallible, because they are flawed. There are some pieces of the measurements that are caused by flaws in the device itself such as a dip, peak, dip pattern from 4.5K-6K~ and some general imbalance due to sealing issues. https://imgur.com/a/BXSoQbm Twitter: https://twitter.com/MaxSettingsYT Want to loan me a headphone or contact me? About This Video

In this video I review the HEDD Audio HEDDPhone, which is easily one of the more interesting releases in the last few years because it’s a full-range AMT headphone. That’s the big talking point: it’s not a hybrid setup with an AMT tweeter/woofer situation—this is fully AMT, which (to my knowledge) makes it basically the only modern full AMT headphone on the market. I go over the specs, build, and why the comfort has been such a point of contention, including the limited height adjustment, the lack of a suspension strap, and the fact that it’s a massive 718g. Sound-wise, I break down what I’m hearing in the bass, mids, and treble, and why the overall tuning comes off “weird” to me. There’s sub-bass roll-off, a strange lower-mid dip around 400–500 Hz, and then a treble that isn’t overly bright but has a lot of air up top. I also talk about technical performance—detail is competitive but not segment-leading for $1700–$1800, stage is fairly wide, and imaging is above average. My big takeaway is that while it’s a cool and fairly successful tech demo for AMT in headphones, it has enough flaws (comfort, tuning oddities, and severe driver crinkle on this unit) that I wouldn’t pick it over heavy hitters like Arya or Clear in this price bracket.
