The ATH-R70X is a mid range offering from Audio-Technica that is not often talked about, and I can see why. While it has a few unique attributes, it doesn't have anything that truly stands out to me as being a top tier pick. About This Video

In this video I review the Audio-Technica ATH-R70X, a $350 open-back that I bought myself—no company involvement—so this is just my honest take on where it lands in today’s midrange market. I go over the basics (470 ohm, 45mm dynamic driver, super light 210g) and talk build/comfort: it feels well put together for how light it is, but the wing system and the fact the cups don’t tilt can be a dealbreaker depending on your head shape. The pads are narrow too, so your ears may touch the driver. Sound-wise, the R70X is interesting but kind of frustrating. Bass and lower mids are surprisingly flat with decent extension (it starts rolling off around 40–50Hz), but it doesn’t hit with much punch, so it can come off thin. The midrange is very forward—borderline shouty around 2–3k—and there’s some extra air/upper treble energy around 9–10k. My biggest issue is detail: compared to the HD6XX/HD600 and the Hifiman Sundara, it sounds grainier in the mids and a bit metallic. It does have decent soundstage and surprisingly good imaging, but overall I don’t see why I’d pick it over a 6XX or Sundara unless you specifically want really forward mids or you need an ultra-light headphone.
