The ATH-R70X is an ultra-light $350 open-back with surprisingly flat bass/lower mids and decent stage/imaging, but it never really becomes a top-tier pick for me. The mids are very forward (borderline shouty), and the overall detail—especially in the mids—comes off grainier than the HD6XX/HD600 or Sundara.

Pros

  • +Extremely light (about 210g)
  • +Decent soundstage (average to slightly above average)
  • +Surprisingly good imaging
  • +Bass extends fairly well for an open-back in this class

Cons

  • -Shouty, forward mids around 2–3k
  • -Mids sound grainy/harsh compared to key competitors
  • -Bass lacks punch/slam and can sound thin
  • -No cup tilt; fit/comfort depends heavily on head shape
  • -Long, spaghetti-like cable with hard-to-replace dual locking connectors
