About This Video

In Part 7 of my traditional pocket series, I’m finishing the head by dialing in the shooting strings. I run one white shooting cord up top to give the release a little more pop, and then I add two regular shooters—same mindset as a mesh setup. I don’t recommend going past three total shooters, because once you stack more than that you’re usually just overdoing it and creating issues you don’t need. I walk through the exact weave pattern I use on a traditional: basically matching straight across, starting around the third sidewall hole, and slightly arcing the top shooter to sit where I want it. I’ll play with whether I do a bunch of weaves or just a couple, and I’ll skip certain sections if it looks cleaner—especially with those little tabs that can get in the way (I usually trim them after). I prefer wrapping around the plastic, and I use needle nose pliers to pull the shooter up and around when space is tight. The big takeaway: don’t crank these down—too tight equals too much whip. Once the chains look right, I tie everything off, do a final once-over on the pocket, and clip the excess to finish it clean.
