About This Video

In Part 5 of my traditional pocket series, I’m finishing the cross lace work and showing you how to transfer cleanly from leather to leather without overcomplicating it. Once I wrap up the second leather, I move over using that simple top loop you left near the top string—no “crazy knot” like the bottom. The big thing here is control: when you cross over, don’t yank the string so tight that one side starts pulling the pocket sideways. You want it to stay nice and straight down. From there, I run the third leather exactly like the first—everything should mirror. I’m watching my diamond spacing as I go, keeping the interlocks lined up in the same row across leathers so the pocket stays even. After I finish the transfer knot at the bottom and tighten it down so it won’t slip, I move to the fourth leather and match it to the second, then cross over again and finish out the last set of interlocks down to the bottom. At the end, I run the string out through a bottom sidewall hole and tie it off—but don’t cut your string yet. Next is tensioning, and you’ll want extra length in case you need to move slack. It’s way easier to work slack out than to try to work it back up into a traditional pocket.
