About This Video

In Part 4 of my traditional pocket series, I’m down at the bottom of the pocket finishing my loops and showing you exactly how I like to transfer the crosslace from one leather to the next. I run six loops using my sidewall loops as my spacing reference, then I do what I call a “transfer knot” instead of cutting the leathers. A lot of people trim the leathers here—I don’t. I’d rather build a clean, tight transfer that stays locked down near the bottom string holes so nothing shifts up and down later. I walk through making two freestanding loops, then threading the leading end back up through them (needle nose pliers help a lot) and cinching everything tight without wrecking the rest of your pocket tension. After that, I show the inner lock / crossover that connects one side of the crosslace to the other. This part matters: if your loops don’t clamp together and sit flat, the pocket won’t break in right. My biggest takeaway is to keep everything evenly spaced, keep the crossover sitting centered on the leather, and don’t over-tighten—slightly looser is better than too tight if you want a smooth, consistent traditional that breaks in correctly.
