My Hardest Day Yet on the Long Trail (2000ft of Climbing!)

Welcome back to the second episode of my Vermont Long Trail series! Today was by far the most challenging day so far — our biggest push yet with over 2000 ft of elevation gain. My pack felt heavier with every step (seriously, it’s killing me 😅), and I quickly learned that frequent breaks are the only way I’m making it up those climbs. As if the uphill battle wasn’t enough, we hit another obstacle: dry water sources. The hunt for water became part of the day’s adventure — and struggle. But after every steep climb and every pause to catch our breath, we finally reached our shelter and could just exhale. There’s nothing quite like that end-of-day moment when you drop your pack and finally relax. Join me for the highs and lows of this tough but rewarding day — and see how we pushed through the climb, the thirst, and the fatigue to keep moving north on the Long Trail. 🌲✨ 📍 Trail: Long Trail, Vermont 🎒 Day 2: Biggest elevation gain so far (~2000 ft) 💧 Challenges: Heavy pack, dry water sources, frequent breaks 🏕️ End of Day: Relaxing at our shelter #VermontLongTrail #Backpacking #thruhike Chapters: 00:00 – Steep Climb on Vermont’s Long Trail 00:45 – Heavy Pack Struggles and Shortness of Breath 01:42 – Rocky Terrain, Steep Elevation, and Bear Country 03:19 – Too Tired for the View: Pushing Through the Climb 04:02 – Why Elevation Gain Hits Harder Than Distance 04:35 – Frequent Breaks: The Only Way to Keep Going 05:57 – Downhill Challenge: Sore Knees and Heavy Gear 06:26 – Dry Water Sources and Late-Summer Trail Conditions 07:22 – Carrying Extra Water: Back Pain and Weight Trade-Off 07:53 – Warm Water Woes and the Search for a Better Source 08:20 – Unusable Water Source and Bacteria Concerns 08:58 – Shelter in Sight and the Sound of Running Water 11:02 – Cold River Water and Post-Hike Recovery Moments 12:03 – Water Filtration Tips and Gear Care on Trail 13:25 – Refueling and Rehydrating After a Grueling Day 14:48 – Day 2 Wrap-Up: Hardest Climb Yet on the Long Trail

About This Video

Day 2 on Vermont’s Long Trail was my hardest day yet — not because the miles were crazy, but because the climbing just kept stacking up. I’m talking about a full-on grind with roughly 2000 feet of elevation gain, and my pack felt heavier with every step. I was getting short of breath fast, the terrain was rocky, and even when the views were there, I honestly didn’t have the energy to care. This is one of those days where you learn that elevation hits different than distance, and you either slow down or you blow up. On top of the climbs, we ran into another late-summer problem: dry water sources. The “maybe there’s water up ahead” game got old real quick, and carrying extra water turned into its own kind of pain—especially on my back. I talk through how I approach questionable sources, what I do when water is warm or stagnant, and why I’d rather keep moving than risk sketchy bacteria. The best moment of the day was hearing running water near the shelter—dropping my pack, filtering cold river water, and finally feeling human again. It was exhausting, messy, and weirdly rewarding… which is pretty much the whole point out here.
