After years of dreaming about hiking the Appalachian Mountains, it’s finally happening! Well, kind of. Just a little section. Actually, a tiny, tiny section. Join me on Day 1 of my section of the Long Trail thru-hike in Vermont as I take my first steps into this rugged, breathtaking wilderness. From adjusting to a heavy pack and dealing with shoulder pain to pushing through steep climbs, rocky terrain, and unexpected challenges, this day was all about testing limits and finding strength I didn’t know I had. We start on Route 11/30 and make our way through dense forest, ski hills, and beautiful fall scenery — chasing water sources, battling exhaustion, and finally setting up camp in a quiet clearing for a cozy night under the stars. I share honest thoughts, trail struggles, and small wins along the way, including a trail angel’s lifesaving water drop and my first freeze-dried dinner review. If you’re planning to hike the Long Trail, section-hike the Appalachian Trail, or simply love real, raw backpacking stories — this episode is for you. #backpacking #appalachiantrail #backcountrycamping 📍 Trail: Long Trail, Vermont, USA 🥾 Distance Hiked: ~8 km ⬆️ Elevation Gain: ~400+ m 🎒 Day 1 of Multi-Day Backpacking Trip ✨ Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell to follow the rest of this series Chapters 00:00 – The Journey Begins: Heading to the Trailhead 00:29 – Dreams Turned Reality: Appalachian Mountains Hike 01:25 – First Steps on the Long Trail 02:04 – Pack Problems and Shoulder Pain 03:14 – Slow and Steady: Uphill Climb and Heavy Packs 04:30 – Pushing Miles Before Tomorrow’s Big Day 06:11 – Trail Snack Break and Stunning Views 07:09 – Fall Colors and Peaceful Moments 08:27 – Water Source Hunt and Rain Incoming 09:47 – Halfway Point Struggles and Fatigue 11:19 – Trail Angel Water Drop Saves the Day 11:40 – Changing Plans: Setting Up Camp Early 13:33 – Campfire Dinner and Dry Wood Jackpot 15:10 – Lessons Learned: Hydration, Nutrition, and Energy 16:26 – Freeze-Dried Meal Review: Mexican Grilled Chicken Bowl

About This Video

Day 1 on Vermont’s Long Trail was my “okay, this is real now” moment — and it nearly broke me. I started at Route 11/30 with a pack that felt way heavier the second my boots hit the dirt, and almost immediately I was dealing with shoulder pain and that slow, grinding reality of uphill miles. The trail throws everything at you right away: steep climbs, rocky footing, dense forest, and those little ski hill sections that look innocent until you’re actually hauling yourself up them. I kept reminding myself I’m not out here to be fast — I’m out here to keep moving. A big theme of this day was water, energy, and adjusting expectations. I spent way too much brain power chasing water sources and watching the weather roll in, and by the halfway point I could feel the fatigue stacking up. Then a trail angel water drop basically saved my day and changed my whole mood. I ended up changing plans and setting up camp earlier than I originally wanted, found a quiet clearing, scored some blessedly dry wood, and had my first freeze-dried dinner on trail. Biggest takeaway: hydration and nutrition aren’t “nice to have” out here — they’re the difference between a hard day and a dangerous one.
