About This Video

In this video I’m talking moisture meters—but really, I’m talking about wood. Wood absorbs and releases moisture, and that’s what causes expansion, contraction, joint gaps, warping, cracking, and even finish problems like that “fogged” look you can get when moisture gets trapped under varnish or polyurethane. I walk through why knowing the moisture content of the wood you’re using is fundamental, because only then can you plan when and how to use it and expect stable results. I compare pin-type meters versus surface (pinless) meters and show a real-world example where the pin meter gave me a totally misleading reading simply because I couldn’t drive the pins deep enough. Then I scan the whole board with a surface meter and show why you should never take just one reading—knots and pitch pockets can throw numbers way off. I also explain equilibrium moisture content charts (temperature + relative humidity) so you can target the right moisture content for your region, and I demonstrate features I really like on a good meter: species settings, dual depth settings, and quick calibration so you can trust your readings.
