About This Video

In this video I’ve got a lot going on in the shop, starting with a bench hold-down clamp that solves a problem I’ve been fighting for a while. F-clamps at the end of my bench were awkward and just didn’t work the way I wanted, so I built a clamp-down vise/hold-down that spans the width of the bench, adjusts quickly, and can handle larger flat work for joinery and shaping. I set it up so I can lock a workpiece down rock solid—then I test it the way I actually work: with one of my paring chisels (razor sharp, hand pressure only) and even an angle grinder with a flap wheel for controlled shaping. Along the way I show a simple trick for reinforcing screw holes: a couple drops of thin CA glue in the hole to harden the wood fibers before installing hanger bolts. It’s also a great fix for stripped holes. I also talk about keeping the system flexible—using a consistent hole pattern (I used my doweling jig), adding anti-skid material, and even the option to swap in angle iron or build a superstructure for other workholding devices. Finally, I share a new woodworking phone app I’m genuinely excited about: Woodworkers Companion. It’s free, updates automatically, supports multiple languages, and packs in practical tools like board-foot and pricing calculators, fraction math, plywood optimization, unit conversions, and even a decibel meter. I recommend putting it right on your phone’s home screen so it’s ready when you’re in the shop.
