Useful tips are a big part of woodworking, they often help us work safer, but certainly help us work smarter by saving time and money by improvising with things we already may have, like clamping wood together, wood clamps are great, but sometimes they don't fit multi angle items, like chair legs, for this we rely on tape and one of the best tapes is inexpensive Shin Pad or Hockey tape, it has untold uses in the shop and if you need to make new thumb screws, longer, shorter of maybe broken, Hot Melt Glue to the rescue, simply use the box-end of a wrench, insert your new bolt and fill with hot melt glue, quick easy and very strong, Drilling into the ends of dowels can be problematic and if not done correctly can cause injury, especially on a drill press, to solve this we can make a quick easy clamping device out of scrap wood, either using forstner bits, hole-saw bits or even just cutting a couple of inset 45 degree cuts on some scrap wood, and clamping any of these together will make a much more secure way holding the dowel while clamping it to the drill press fence, and before you go re-adjusting your sliding miter for a minor adjustments, using a popsicle stick or similar or even a thin piece of veneer can be used to adjust the wood for those miniscule adjustments.
