How much would you pay for a single dynamic driver in 2026—$900? In this video I review the Meze Astru and basically answer the real question: does it have the sauce, and does it justify the price? Sound-wise, the Astru is full, natural, and well-balanced with a slight sub-bass boost and a firm, textured mid-bass. The main flex is the soundstage: it keeps that “ball-like” 3D wrap-around vibe like the OG MiM Dark Magician, but adds a longer decay that pushes the stage outward so it feels bigger and more immersive instead of intimate. I compare it against sets like Monarch Mk4, OG EJ07, Softears Twilight, and Nightjar Singularity. If you’re chasing raw resolution/imaging per dollar, yeah, you can get more “technical” at $300–$500. But if you want end-game immersion, natural timbre, and scaling (these need juice and they get way better at higher volume), the Astru is one of the best 1DD experiences I’ve heard. It’s also insanely comfy—light, ergonomic, and easy for long sessions. Then I do the durability test: the hydraulic press. The nozzle cracked around ~1K, but the titanium shell held up to roughly 3.8–4K without the sides cracking. Final take: I highly recommend it if you’re balling or you find a deal—otherwise, wait for a sale or go used, because $900 for 1DD is still a hard sell.
