In this video I compare the new AirPods Max 2 to the AirPods Max 1 and answer the big question: what actually changed for $549… ouch. Spoiler: not much. The colors are basically the same, the size is the same, and yes—you still get the same smart case (bummer). The real headline is the jump from the H1 chip to the H2 chip, which finally matches what Apple’s already doing in AirPods Pro 2. Feature-wise, AirPods Max 2 get up to 1.5x better active noise cancelling, plus you now get Adaptive Audio (it can tone down sudden loud sounds when you’re walking around), Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, and lossless audio over USB‑C. Bluetooth also gets updated from 5.0 to 5.3. Battery life stays the same at 20 hours, and there’s still no power button—you “turn them off” by putting them in the case so they go into ultra low power mode. My takeaway: it’s hard to recommend upgrading from Max 1 unless you have the Lightning version and you truly need to replace them. If you don’t own AirPods Max at all and can swallow $549 (and the weight), sure—but I still wouldn’t recommend it.
