On March 23, 2026, the FCC in the U.S. bans all new foreign consumer grade router models in the US! This will have a significant impact of upgrades of future consumer grade models for consumers. All routers on the market prior to March 23rd is still allowed to be sold and purchased, but all new models will be banned unless approved by the FCC. The intention is supposedly to improve security of consumer grade routers since they are often targets by foreign adversaries. However, I'm not sure which consumer grade models will be allowed in the future by the current restrictions since most manufacturers do most of the production of the routers in foreign countries. One of the most significant impacts for the current allowed routers is with firmware updates. According to the FCC FAQ and other information provided by the FCC, it seems as though new firmware updates of currently allowed routers are only going to be allowed until March 1st, 2027 since new firmware updates will fall under the "covered" list of banned routers. This means existing routers will be firmware locked and no longer able to receive critical security updates unless the terms of the waiver or the ban changes before March 1st, 2027. This will end up making consumer routers even more insecure if firmware updates won't be allowed going forward! I don't normally cover tech related news, but I thought this is big news for my US audience.
