If you would like to have a display, keyboard, mouse and other USB devices in one room but your PC, server, or laptop in another room, you may be interested in KVM extenders. KVM extenders have one transmitter box and one reciever box that may be connected by Ethernet or fiber cables to greatly extend the distance allowed by HDMI and USB cables (up to 150m with Ethernet and up to 10-80km depending on the type of fiber cables used). Although KVM over IP devices offer a solid solution for remote administration, those devices often have increased latency and poorer image quality due to network latency and video compression. Using KVM extenders typically offer lower latency and higher image quality. Disclosure: Kinan KVM sent me the KVM extender for this video but opinions are my own. To ground expectations, KVM extenders do introduce a small amount of latency unlike traditional KVMs. Kinan advertises less than 16ms of latency at 1080p 60Hz and less than 32ms at 4K 30Hz. In comparison, the fastest IP KVM devices advertise 30-60ms latency and that is often at 1080p resolution as well. I will note that I had trouble with this KVM extender when connecting to an older Dell 24" LCD screen that has a native resolution of 1920x1200. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio. Although the display does support 1080p, for some reason the KVM extender would not work properly with that monitor even though it would show the message that it's waiting for a signal when my device was turned off. Also switching to different screen resolutions or refresh rate on my Windows mini PC was a little bit tricky because by the time the screen would switch to the new resolution or refresh rate, it would be time to automatically revert back to the previous settings. You only have a second or 2 to click the accept changes button. I tried testing the fiber connection but unfortunately since I only have SFP+ modules for 10Gbps, those do not work with this KVM. I imagine it should work fine if you use SFP modules since SFP and SFP+ modules are not always compatible with each other depending on the capabilities of the optics and the switching.
