Because of the high RAM and storage prices, an incremental upgrade utilizing existing hardware may make sense if you're current hardware is several generations old. In this video, I show an example upgrade path that helped boost my CPU performance by at least 40% in addition to gaining some PCIe 4.0 performance which I lacked on my current hardware. My current system has 64 GB of DDR4 RAM and 2 NVMe modules, all of which would be quite expensive to replace with newer DDR5 and PCIe 4.0 components. The CPU is a Ryzen 7 1700 which has served me well over the years. Since I'm planning to use the 64 GB of DDR4 RAM to save a lot of money, it made sense to get the most recent generation of the AM4 platform which still utilizes DDR4 RAM. I narrowed down my CPU selection to the Ryzen 7 5700G and the Ryzen 7 5700X. I thought about the 5700G in case I want to reuse this hardware in the future without needing a separate GPU. However, I discovered that if you use the 5700G CPU, you lose PCIe 4.0 functionality. PCIe 4.0 functionality is available when using the 5700X. The 5700X is a bit faster than the 5700G so along with PCIe 4.0, it helped solidify my decision. I like that the TDP is the same 65W as my older Ryzen 7 1700 so energy consumption should roughly be the same even with the 40%+ boost in performance (I know TDP isn't the best indicator of actual power consumption).
