US lawmakers are pushing the MATCH Act, and the goal is to ban the export and even the servicing of ASML’s Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) lithography equipment to China. That’s not some random tool—China’s higher-end chip production depends on DUV for anything beyond older 28nm-class stuff, and it’s how companies can push into 7nm-class territory. If this goes through, it directly targets players like Huawei, SMIC, Hua Hong, and memory makers like CXMT and YMTC. And I’ll be blunt: this is bad news. Not just for China, but for the entire mobile ecosystem. I said it in the stream—if it were up to me, I’d want open trade, because these moves ripple into everything we buy. Xiaomi is a perfect example: they’ve started designing their own chips, and cutting off DUV supply chains can jack up that whole roadmap. On top of that, memory pricing is already going insane because AI data centers are buying up RAM supply, which squeezes phone makers, PC upgrades, even automakers. Then I pivot into something that’s going to make the situation even messier: Qualcomm (a US company) reportedly partnering with China’s CXMT to develop custom DRAM for smartphones.
