The way things are going, it feels like every couple days we get worse news—and this one is a big deal. In this clip I break down “RAMageddon,” aka the memory crisis, where RAM and storage pricing has basically gone nuclear. Memory costs have skyrocketed (we’re talking triple in some cases), and while Apple, Google, and Samsung can ride that wave out—Apple/Google because they’re basically money printers, and Samsung because they literally make the memory—Chinese brands don’t have that luxury. I explain why this hits Xiaomi, Oppo (and by extension OnePlus), Vivo, and Realme the hardest, and why leakers like Ice Universe and Digital Chat Station are saying some of these companies may pause Ultra flagship development for 2–3 years. The core issue is the “80/20 split” in flagship builds: a massive chunk of the bill of materials goes into camera sensors/software, and when memory pricing explodes, it wrecks that formula. If they cut camera to afford RAM, they get blasted for “trash cameras,” and if they keep the camera, they risk selling a $1,000 phone with margins so thin it’s not worth making. Even if you’re in the U.S. and you’ve never bought an Oppo or Xiaomi, you should care—less competition means less pressure on Samsung, Google, and Apple to innovate and price aggressively. This is how an industry gets stale fast.
