In this video I’m breaking down what I call the “80/20 split” in flagship phone development—and why a RAM/memory price spike is basically blowing that whole model up for brands like Oppo, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and the rest of the Chinese ultra-flagship crowd. The idea is simple: if a company has, say, around $400 to source parts for a phone (with $500 being the hard cap), about 80% of that budget ends up going into camera tech. Sensors are expensive, development is expensive, and the software work to make those sensors look good is a massive cost. The problem is memory pricing is skyrocketing, and memory lives in that “other 20%” bucket with stuff like speakers, the vibration motor, flex cables, display, and storage. When RAM and storage jump in cost, it eats into the budget that used to go to cameras. And you can’t ship an “Ultra” phone with ultra specs and then deliver a trash camera experience—because the reviews and publications will absolutely cook you for it. The takeaway: if memory keeps climbing, something has to give, and it’s going to force uncomfortable trade-offs in next-gen flagship builds.
