In this Stash Up! episode, I’m walking you through how I “audition” a sewing pattern before I ever cut into my fabric. The whole point is to choose patterns that make you feel confident—because when the proportion is right and the fit is working with your body, you’re going to wear the garment. I show you how to take a pattern’s line drawing and overlay it onto a personal croquis (a sketch of your body based on your measurements) so you can quickly see where waistlines, hemlines, and style lines are going to hit on you. I share three ways to make that personal croquis: using My Body Model (paid), using ChatGPT (free—plus I made you a downloadable prompt guide), or going super low-tech and tracing a photo. Then I bring in the idea of golden proportion to help you place garment “breaks” (like hemlines and seam lines) in more flattering spots, and I talk about print scale—because the same print can read totally differently depending on body size and garment design. I also point to pattern examples (including Love Notions) for tummy-friendly options, petite elongation, and what to do if you’re long-waisted and empire waists keep landing in the wrong place.
