Teaching a child to read is honestly one of the most terrifying things I’ve done so far in our homeschool—especially as a stay-at-home mom juggling a whole lot of real life (and yes, a big family). In this video, I’m sharing a 2nd grade homeschool update that had me equal parts relieved and excited: my current 2nd grader had his lightbulb moment with reading. I really thought we were headed into an uphill battle, and I know that feeling can be so discouraging when you’re watching your child struggle to “get it.” What I want you to take away from this is simple: it WILL get better. I’ve taught multiple kids to read, and I’ve seen that moment where things finally click—sometimes later than we expect, sometimes after we’ve tried what feels like everything. If you’re in that hard, slow season of phonics, decoding, or just daily reading practice that feels like it’s going nowhere, I’m here to tell you not to quit. Keep showing up, keep being consistent, and keep believing your child is capable—even when it’s scary.
