Up until recently, our family mostly played with Play-Doh, and I honestly thought I was just re-ordering a single color when I clicked on a “modeling clay for kids” listing on Amazon. Turns out, it was air-dry clay—and it’s actually a pretty different material. In this video, I share what I noticed right away: air-dry clay feels super light, smooth, and silky, and pulling/stretching it is weirdly satisfying (it reminds me of making Chinese noodles). Play-Doh has more weight, feels a bit rougher, and doesn’t stretch as much. I also break down the practical differences for toddler play. Air-dry clay holds its shape beautifully once it dries, but you can’t reshape it afterward, so it’s more “one-and-done” and can get pricey over time. Play-Doh can crack when it dries, but you can add water and reuse it, which is more forgiving. Then I show the cute beginner creations I made for my toddler’s pretend play—pizza (with a cardboard base), plus more foods and little items like cake, cookie, cheese, a bottle-cap flower, cactus, donut, drumstick, and even an itsy bitsy spider. Seeing L get excited and want to play with what I made was the best part.
