MTH RailKing PRR S2 Turbine With LocoSound MTH 30-1149-0 I’d love a scale Turbine, but my layout doesn’t have large enough curves. This model is a good compromise. Hope you enjoy the video! About This Video

Welcome back to DA Griffin Hobby—my name’s Dave, and in this one I’m unboxing and running a new-to-me engine: an MTH RailKing PRR S2 Turbine (30-1149-0) with LocoSound. Turbines have always been a “thing” for me, and I start the video with my postwar 681 and 671 on the inner loop—especially the 681 that belonged to my uncle. I spent a lot of time in the early 80s staring at that engine in his basement, so it’s got a lot of meaning behind it. I’d love a full scale turbine, but the reality is my layout doesn’t have the curve radius for it, and the budget matters too. This RailKing 6200 is a really good compromise: it’s bigger than the postwar turbines and looks more “prototypical” thanks to that spacing in the drivers, even though it’s still compressed. I go through what I like (colors, size, overall look), what’s a little disappointing (no rear tender lights, weak whistle, no bell, and no speed control), and then I crack it open—four screws and you’re in—to see what’s actually inside. Bottom line: it’s a simple, conventional runner with an electronic QSI reversing unit, easy to service, and for about $267 shipped I’m thrilled with the value. It’s something I can run with more scale-looking cars without it feeling tiny, and it’s going to get plenty of laps on the outer loop.
