Welcome back to DA Griffin Hobby—my name’s Dave. In this video I took a trip to a spot a lot of people would drive right past: National Railroad Worx in Mahwah, New Jersey. It’s tucked inside National Lawn Equipment, so from the outside you’d never know there’s a train shop in there. It’s in more of an industrial area on Island Road, just off Route 17, and it’s honestly a little hidden gem. The store is mostly mowers and lawn equipment, but they’ve got a pretty good dedicated train area and even a decent-sized layout. While I was there I grabbed a bunch of pictures of what they had for sale and the layout, and of course I had to bring a few things home. I’ve been stalled on layout progress because it’s been so cold—when it’s 10° out, I can’t keep the train room warm enough to work—so I picked up a couple of really nice Layout Master trees to give me something new to add when it warms up. I’m thinking one might end up near the tunnel entrance. And because I always feel like I need to come home with some rolling stock, I also picked up an MTH Curtis Baby Ruth reefer—good shape overall, even if a couple ladders are broken (that’s going on the “maybe someday” project list). I also show off a 3D printed business card billboard holder I designed, because that National Lawn Equipment card makes a perfect little layout billboard.
