New study reveals devastating impact of cane toads approaching the Pilbara

New #CurtinResearch warns that invasive cane toads could reach #WesternAustralia’s #Pilbara within the next 10 to 20 years, threatening native wildlife and causing major cultural and economic harm. The study, led by Dr Judy Dunlop with co-author Professor Ben Phillips from the Curtin School of Molecular and Life Sciences (MLS), predicts that without containment, cane toads could colonise up to 75% of the Pilbara within three decades. This puts 25 native species at risk, including northern quolls, ghost bats, kalutas, goannas, blue-tongue skinks and frog-eating snakes. Dr Dunlop and Professor Phillips say simple containment measures, like preventing toads from using dams as stepping stones, could protect WA’s environment, culture and economy.
