Lard (I use bacon grease) 1 T. Salt Step 2: 1 ½ Cups Lukewarm Water (105-115 degrees) 1 packet or 1 T. Yeast ¼ Cup Sugar Step 3: 6 ½ Cups of bread flour (Put in 4 cups then add half of a cup at a time to be sure that you don’t add too much flour, you may need more or less flour to get it to a tacky stage mix until you can do the windowpane test successfully) *Optional: ¼ t. of Vit. C Powder (optional, add after all ingredients are combined.) Step 1: Mix milk, sugar, lard, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat, (Long enough to melt oil, but don’t let it come to a boil) Set aside to cool. Step 2: Mix water (100-110 degrees) and yeast then add sugar and mix. (Let set for 10 minutes until nice and bubbly.) Step 3: Once the milk mixture is cool enough (100-110 degrees) mix yeast and milk ingredients in a large bowl and add the vitamin C powder. Mix in flour until the dough is not very sticky and the windowpane test is complete. Step 4: Oil the top of the dough, cover with saran or towel, and let rise until doubled. Step 5: Divide into two loaves, put in oiled bread pans, and oil the top of the loaf. Let rise until doubled. Step 6: Once the dough is almost doubled, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake until brown and internal temperature is 190-200 degrees. (Approximately 30-45 min.) Baste with butter and put on a cooling rack to cool (if you wait this step, the crust may get soggy). Don’t be tempted to cut into it or you will lose moisture in the bread. 😊 Store at room temperature in a plastic bag or airtight container for 3 or 4 days. Makes 2 loaves (you can do multiple batches at once with no issues) Below contains affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase them—at no extra cost to you.
