In this updated 2024 tutorial, I’m showing you how I run Synology DSM on Proxmox VE using the newer ArcLoader method. A bunch of you watched my earlier “Synology on any computer” video, so I wanted to follow it up with the cleaner homelab option: do it as a VM in Proxmox. To make it dead simple, I’m also giving you my preconfigured Proxmox backup/template—drop it into your backups folder, restore it, and you’re basically at the install stage straight away. If you don’t trust a backup from the internet (fair), I also walk through the setup so you can build it yourself. I go over the VM hardware choices I’m using (RAM, cores, CPU type), and why I stick with x86-64-v2 on my Ryzen system instead of “host” for compatibility. From there it boots into ArcLoader just like it would on bare metal: you pick the Synology model (I use a DS718+ as an example), let it reboot, and then you finish DSM setup like a normal Synology NAS. One big benefit of doing this in Proxmox is manageability—ArcLoader can be accessed via its web UI, and updates are generally easier to deal with when everything’s virtualized. The takeaway: quick, repeatable DSM installs on Proxmox, with a template to save you time.
