About This Video

In this video I walk you through waxing and buffing a fiberglass/gel coat boat for the very first time—because I know exactly how daunting it feels to put a buffer on a boat you love. I keep it simple: get a good quality buffer (nothing fancy), choose the right pad, and work in small sections so you stay in control. I also show you what oxidation looks like on gel coat (that chalky, dull line where salt has baked on in the sun) and explain when you’ll need an oxidation remover versus when a cleaner wax is all you need. I demonstrate my exact process on a water-spotted area: dampen the wool pad slightly to stop fluff flying everywhere, add three blobs of product to the pad, smear it onto the gel coat first, then buff on a low setting with basically no pressure—let the tool do the work. I work about a two-foot square at a time and change directions (up/down, across, and around) to help avoid swirl marks. Then I wipe it off with a cloth and you can immediately see the difference—water spots gone, gloss back, and a protective finish that’s well worth doing each season.
